Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands. It has been the capital of the kingdom since 1814. Located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country at the mouth of the Amstel and IJ rivers. Amsterdam is connected to the North Sea by a canal.
Amsterdam is a city of canals with more than 600 bridges. The most beautiful are Blauburg and Mahere Brug (“Skinny Bridge”). From the water you can see most of Amsterdam's sights and hundreds of picturesque bridges. Many visitors to Amsterdam are amazed at the amazing amount of water in the city. Thanks to its canals, Amsterdam is called the "Venice of the North". A trip to Amsterdam isn't perfect unless you take a boat trip.
The four main canals in Amsterdam are the Prinsengracht, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Singel. There are also many smaller channels, the most interesting of which are Brouwersgracht and Bloemgracht.
